It is quite common for people to prefer and stick to a single operating system, despite its drawbacks, just to be able to continue using specific functions. But in an era where generational OS updates focus so much on AI improvements, could we see a similar pattern? Unless you’re a supporter of the modern Luddite movement, you’ve probably already chosen one of your favorites among the AI chatbots available. But is that enough for you to stick with (or switch to) a certain phone or platform?
That’s what we asked our readers in a recent survey we conducted while Comparing Siri, finally equipped with AI, with Gemini. Although Siri borrows its framework from Gemini, the results of both chatbots are markedly different. As my colleague Dhruv Bhutani discovered, Siri, even in beta, exceeds expectations by displaying personal results from apps like Messages and Mail, while also serving better for planning your day by pulling information from different third-party apps, including Gmail.
For many users, especially those who are unfazed by Gemini, this may be a compelling enough reason to switch from Android to iOS. However, as we learned from the survey, Android Authority readers can resist that temptation.
AI is not convincing enough… yet
According to our survey results, a large percentage of respondents believe that AI needs to do more before it forces them to change.
Nearly 60% of respondents said they wouldn’t switch from Android to iOS (or vice versa) just to experience better AI features, simply because it’s not worth it. Meanwhile, another 14% said they are too invested in an operating system to leave it without a promising differentiator.
About 27% of people said they would be willing to take the step. And for a majority of them, privacy is an important factor. Nearly 18% of respondents say they would consider switching if privacy and data management were involved. Since its inception, Apple has talked about its Private Cloud Compute, an encrypted vault for AI processing in the cloud, as essential to managing users’ personal data. Reader jason commented on the original post, saying, “Apple’s focus on privacy and local processing is a big differentiator for me.”
There was some debate in the comments about whether Gemini and Siri (also based on Gemini) are really different. GlitterGuru says, “As long as Google holds the keys, Gemini will always be better and have more features, and Apple will get last year’s features.” Meanwhile, Lamar says, “iPhone users are getting a custom Gemini combined with Siri and the Gemini app. That’s more than enough updated AI.”
