He Lenovo G02 appeared in May as a rather shady price of $60 Linux handheld. Lenovo later confirmed the existence of the device, but said it was a white-label device intended for China only. Now it seems that this story has taken another turn.
Retro Dodo reports that Lenovo has removed the G02 handheld from all markets where it was originally sold. The outlet says this includes AliExpress and Alibaba. We’ve asked Lenovo to confirm whether the handheld has indeed been discontinued and will update the article as soon as the company contacts us. If confirmed, this would conclude a rather strange saga.
The handheld appeared on companies like AliExpress earlier this year, complete with preloaded ROMs from Nintendo, Sega, and others. Lenovo claimed at the time that the device was not authorized for sale outside of China and did not include preloaded games in its home market.
Apparently, this device was removed from some global platforms before resurfacing as Sunyao G02. Sunyao is a sub-brand of Lenovo known for offering headphones, cooling fans, and more. It is unclear if the Sunyao G02 also shipped with preloaded ROMs outside of China.
Either way, I’d love to see Lenovo try again at a budget price. portable. But I would also like to see this future device have a proper global release without resorting to third-party platforms that may or may not preload ROMs.
