The Call of Duty development teams at Treyarch and Raven Software made the call to launch the Black Ops Royale mode with 4-player teams, requiring everyone to enter the new mode at launch with a quad squad. Those who were unable to group together enough friends had the option of entering their matches at a disadvantage due to a smaller team size or allowing the team to fill up to match them with random players to complete the team.

The Call of Duty team also made the decision to remove other modes from Call of Duty: Warzone during the initial launch period, including the Standard Battle Royale experience in Verdansk, the casual Battle Royale and Resurgence modes in Rebirth Island and Haven’s Hollow.
The development team was adamant that the decision to limit available modes and team sizes for Black Ops Royale was necessary to gather valuable insights into gameplay and player behavior. Data from the initial release will be used along with player feedback to further tune and shape the Black Ops Royale experience in the future.
Raven Software also warned solo players that because Black Ops Royale was designed with quads in mind, some adjustments to the mode may need to be made to make it more compatible with solo play.
Solos is coming to Black Ops Royale tomorrow! As a reminder, this mode was originally designed and balanced to be released as a Quads experience. While we recognize the strong interest in a Solos option, please note that the game is not yet fully ported to single player… https://t.co/0qzEd0pyv4March 18, 2026
Along with the introduction of solo queues for Black Ops Royale, the Standard Battle Royale mode set in Verdansk has returned to Warzone after being disabled during the Black Ops Royale launch window.
Warzone is traditionally limited to just one active “big map” at a time to avoid fracturing the player base and maintain a healthy player count for faster matchmaking. Players can now visit Verdansk in Standard Battle Royale or Avalon in Black Ops Royale.
Players also have a wide variety of game modes and maps to choose from with this latest update. The Resurgence playlist will rotate on a timer between Rebirth Island and Haven’s Hollow with queues for solos, duos, and quads.
Resurgence Casual Quads are also available on a timer between Rebirth and Haven’s Hollow. A limited-time Extreme Resurgence mode is also active with 100 players on a small map for quick 11-minute matches, but it’s quad-only in Haven’s Hollow.
Battle Royale playlists are limited to Casual Quads or Standard Quads in Verdansk. 3-person squads who don’t want to pick a random one only have Ranked Resurgence as an option for this week.
