The RAM shortage just made one type of PC the smartest you can have in 2026, and it’s not what you’d expect


For most of the last decade, the value proposition of DIY construction was considered gospel. Choose your own parts, avoid the OEM middleman tax, and get a machine that beats anything a pre-built manufacturer would sell you for that price. The memory economy punishes cash buyers, not contract buyers

To understand why the mini PC suddenly makes fiscal sense, it helps to understand how differently the shortage treats the two types of memory buyers. When you add a RAM kit to your cart, you’re basically paying the spot price, which reflects what the market will bear that day of the week. OEMs, on the other hand, have a different procurement logic. They purchase DRAM and NAND months, and sometimes years, in advance through volume contracts, meaning that the memory found inside a mini PC configured today was likely purchased under negotiated pricing deals before RAM prices reached the stratosphere.

Available data on DRAM contract prices also illustrate this asymmetry. In a February 2026 report, the quarter-on-quarter increase in DRAM contract prices rose to 90-95%which sounds catastrophic until you start comparing it to the retail shelf, where kits have gone up since less than $100 to $375-$400 during the same periodwhich represents an increase of approximately 300%. This should tell you why mini PCs have been able to maintain reasonable prices in the consumer market.

A configured mini PC ships with its RAM and storage included in the sticker price, so I decided to check out how much those exact same components would cost if you bought them separately today. A mini PC equipped with an octa-core Ryzen 7 machine configured with 32GB of DDR5 memory and a 1TB NVMe drive currently sells for an average price of $559. However, if you were to build an equivalent system, it would cost you approximately 40% more. just for the price of memory and storage.

DDR5 and Gen 4 PCIe NVMe memory, when purchased individually, cost $217 more than the complete computer, and the price of the computer includes the processor, motherboard, power supply, cooling, dual 2.5G LAN, at least Wi-Fi 6E, USB4, a case, and an operating system. To be fair, the included drive wouldn’t exactly be on par with the controller on a T500 or endurancebut the amount of dollars saved makes the comparison survive the correction.

While mini PCs have been somewhat protected from the worst effects of DRAM-driven inflation, worrying signs are already appearing everywhere. In October 2025, the popular mini PC manufacturer Minisforum decided to undertake a peculiar approach to price increases. The increases affected the retail prices of its lineup, except with an exemption for base models and configurations that shipped without DDR5 memory or SSD storage. It was clear that the company raised prices only when it absorbed memory costs and left them unchanged when the memory problem was passed on to the consumer. In other words, if you followed Minisforum’s approach, it would take you right into the retail market you were trying to escape from in the first place.

The timing of purchase matters just as much, if not more. Major manufacturers like Lenovo, Dell, HP, Asus, and Acer have warned of price increases starting in the second half of 2026, which essentially means that cheap inventory from older contract prices is quickly running out. The existing mini PCs on the shelves were built with memory purchased at previous rates, and when that inventory changes, the shield will inevitably disappear as well. Now is as good a time as any to get a mini PC, because it seems like prices should have gone up a long time ago.

Mini PCs are a great buy, for now

For anyone looking to enter the PC ecosystem, mini PCs seem to provide a path at a reasonable price and reasonable specifications, especially considering the alternatives. If you find that your workload lies in browsers, office applications, media, and light creative work, a well-configured mini PC might be the only way to buy 32GB of DDR5 without paying hugely inflated prices.
