Shortages at retail and possible service interruption may indicate an update or future update to the Shield TV Pro.
When it comes to streaming devices, there’s no more loyal user base than Nvidia Shield TV owners, and it makes sense given the extensive support Nvida has offered the line over the years. It’s also a great piece of hardware that features more RAM and USB ports than its main competitors, plus support for expandable storage.
However, it appears the tech giant has pulled support for its basic bathtub-shaped Shield TV, with many noting that it’s impossible to find at the moment at retailers.
According AFTVnewsthe cheaper Shield TV has not been consistently available in Amazon for months, and retailers like Best buy and Newegg list the streaming device as out of stock. On the other hand, B&H Photo Labels Shield TV as discontinued. Shield TV launched in 2019 as part of a broader refresh that included a new version of the $200 Shield TV Pro. Since Shield TV is apparently discontinued, this leaves Shield TV Pro as Nvidia’s only streaming device.
Shield TV Pro is unlikely to have been discontinued
A few months ago, Nvidia said it plans to continue supporting the streaming device.
Could this mean that Nvidia could also discontinue the Shield TV Pro? It’s possible, but earlier this year, Andrew Bell, senior vice president of hardware engineering at Nividia, said that the company does not plan to stop producing or updating the Nvidia Shield “any time soon.”
“No matter how much we lower the price or how much we market it or not, the same number of people come out of the woodwork every week to buy the Shield,” Bell said in the interview with Ars Technique.
At the time, rumors indicated that Nvidia might have plans to release a new version of the Shield TV Pro. There’s also a chance that Nvidia may have discontinued the base Shield TV to prepare for an update. XDA has reached out to Nvidia for more information on the possible discontinuation of the Shield TV and will update this story if we hear back.
