M7 Ultra will potentially feature up to 1.5TB of RAM, finally matching the 2019 Mac Pro: report

According to the latest ignition newsletter According to Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing to include up to 1.5TB of RAM in the upcoming M7 Ultra chip. This will mean that Apple Silicon will finally match the highest RAM configuration available in the highest-end 2019 Intel Mac Pro.

The amount of RAM available in Apple Silicon Macs has always been a limitation, largely because Apple solders the RAM onto the same chip as the processor, allowing for immensely high transfer speeds. This is what makes unified memory possible. Of course, it also means that the amount of RAM is limited to the size of the chipset.

However, according to Mark GurmanIt looks like Apple is finally getting ready to close that gap. The company is preparing an M7 Ultra chipset configuration with 1.5 TB of RAM:

The new Ultra is designed to support up to 1.5 terabytes of memory (roughly double the capacity planned for the M5 Ultra), although whether Apple ultimately offers that configuration will depend on the state of the industry. The widespread shortage of memory chips has made the component harder to find and more expensive.

He notes that it may not launch with 1.5TB of RAM due to the current memory shortage. However, Apple is designing the M7 Ultra to support it.

Earlier this year, Apple discontinued the 512GB configuration of the M3 Ultra Mac Studio. Then followed the interruption of the 256 GB configuration – leaving 96GB as the only option for the highest-end Mac Studio. If you bought the M4 Max, you can configure up to 128 GB.

Apple will also introduce a new M5 Ultra chip later this year with up to 768GB of unified memory, a new record for Apple silicon.

Based on Apple’s current price of RAM (about $25 per additional gigabyte), upgrading to 1.5TB of RAM from a base 128GB configuration will likely cost more than $35,000.
