Samsung details the secrets of Flex Titanium folding screen technology

Samsung’s new foldables are on the way. He Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8 Six forms have already been leaked since Sunday, and in just over a week, we’ll finally see all three become official in July 22 Unpacked Event. Ahead of that formal debut, we’re still very interested in learning more about exactly what makes this next generation of foldable devices special, and tonight Samsung is highlighting its latest teaser: flexible titanium.

Building a good foldable phone means solving all sorts of complicated engineering problems, from keeping the thickness down to finding room for batteries, but first on that list has to be getting the look of the foldable display panel. One of the biggest challenges has been to minimize the impact of any type of fold in the middle and offer an expansive screen that still rivals non-folding ones in quality. We have already heard rumors that Samsung had come up with a smart “Wrinkle-free” solution for the Fold 8 and the rest of this year’s lineup, and now the company explains how it’s doing it.

Flex Titanium is Samsung’s brand for a innovative approach to its foldable design which is based on two key components: a super thin and flexible titanium alloy sheet that is integrated into the screen, just below the OLED panel, and a titanium plate underneath for a flexible but robust support.

The alloy film is designed to be a much stiffer alternative to something like a polymer, allowing Samsung to add stability to the screen without increasing the thickness; This film is only one-third the diameter of a human hair.

It’s then held in place by the titanium plate, and by covering it with micro-patterned holes where it folds, Samsung says it’s been able to allow it to remain flexible while adhering firmly to the screen above. That secure connection is meant to help with long-term durability and all without interfering with the ability to easily fold and unfold as needed.

According to Samsung, all of this makes for an uncompromising solution that achieves the goals of design, quality and durability all at the same time. Although the company recognizes that working with titanium can be a difficult material, Samsung seems very pleased with this ultimate solution it has managed to come up with and is excited to show it off with next week’s phones.
