Before The Odyssey reach the cinemasWriter-director Christopher Nolan praised one specific cast member: Samantha Morton, who has a small but very important role in his film. With the film now open, audiences can experience Morton’s interpretation of Circe, a witch who transforms Odysseus’ men into pigs. In a new interview with the hollywood reporterthe star, whom fans of the genre may know best Minority report and The living dead—He talked about how he approached the role.
He admitted that he had never read the ancient Greek poem by Homer that the film adapts (although he had seen the the simpsons parody of it). “But the script blew me away and I was very moved by how contemporary it seemed,” he told THR. “When I got the role, I was so excited to be able to get Chris and (producer) Emma (Thomas) to make my instincts come true.”
She carried that initial impression of the script into her performance as Circe. “I felt like she was incredibly contemporary. I could relate to her. She felt like my sister, my mother, my grandmother, my aunt, my neighbor. She felt very real and very condensed,” Morton said.
She continued. “I’m talking about the essential will of Circe. It’s absolutely extraordinary what Chris has done with all the women in the movie. She feels so complete, so fully realized, and yet you’re not there with her for an incredibly long period of time. I think in that short period of time, there’s so much to accomplish. But it doesn’t feel rushed. It doesn’t feel forced. It feels like she’s every woman. She’s all of us. I really connected with that.”
The Odyssey It’s already in theaters.
