In addition to 3.6 flashGoogle is also updating Gemini for macOS today with the Neural Expressive redesign.
At I/O 2026 in May, Gemini on Android, iOS, and the web received the Expressive neural design language.. It is now available in the Mac app.
On startup, you’ll see the same colorful gradient temporarily surrounding the message bar. All app icons have been updated to thin outline style. On the home page alone, there are updated buttons for the side panel, voice input, temporary chat, and even mini/full app view (it’s now rounded). You’ll also see new icons in the “more” menu for consistency across platforms.
Old versus new
The navigation drawer changes to pill-shaped indicators for noting what you’re currently viewing, while the Settings menu has also been updated.
Neural Expressive is available with version 1.86 of Gemini for macOS. The Gemini side panel for Chrome remains in the previous design language today.
In other visual updates, Google this week released the latest design for AI mode on Android. Specifically, the prompt box is now a floating container instead of docked to the bottom of the screen like a sheet. Another tweak places the “plus” menu and send button on the pickups.
Before this redesign and Neural Expressive, both applications shared the bottom sheet to find their prompt boxes. (The Google Health Coach still looks like that.) It was an interesting idea to unify the feel of the AI experience across the company.
