The cave samples consisted of 29 different types of phytoliths from grasses, herbs and woody plants, of which about 18% were burned or melted.

“Unlike pollen, which is dispersed by wind or insects, phytoliths primarily accumulate where a plant decomposes,” Elle Grono, first author of the study and an archaeologist at the Australian National University, said in an article. statement. “No plants grow inside the cave due to the lack of light, so the phytoliths must have been transported by people or animals such as opossums in their fur or through their feces.”
