LG got caught with its hand in the cookie jar this week. an investigation by Player nexus revealed that connecting certain LG monitors to a Windows 11 PC was silently installing a companion app without the user’s consent.
Normally, some people would agree with this, although others would argue that nothing should be fixable. install an app on your PC without permission.
But the situation worsened when it was revealed that the The monitor app also displayed McAfee ads..

Microsoft was forced to intervene. The tech giant approached LG and McAfee ads no longer appear. But Microsoft shouldn’t have had to do anything at all. LG showed that Microsoft needs to rein in accessory makers and better control Windows 11.

One could argue that no company should be able to install software on your PC without explicit permission. But in a perfect world, those same companies could be trusted to only install relevant software, like a required monitor app or the drivers needed for an accessory to work.
Unfortunately, that is not the case. LG abused the trust given by Microsoft and Windows 11 users installing adware on people’s PCs every time they connected certain monitors.

Microsoft needs to restrict these types of installations in Windows 11 and ensure that any apps that are installed are done after the user has given permission. Even useful apps that help control a device should only appear when the user deletes them.
