How many games do you know that update their system requirements 17 years after their release? Given how long Minecraft has thrived for almost two decades, it’s probably no surprise that the game requires more robust hardware today than it did at launch. Mojang has updated the old system requirements for the game and honestly, the new requirements are very reasonable given the evolution of the game.

Beyond the minecraft websiteMojang has announced an adjustment to the game’s system requirements. This is usually bad news for gamers who are worried about their hardware falling behind, but don’t panic. This isn’t Mojang announcing a huge graphical overhaul that will leave thousands of older PCs unable to play Minecraft, but rather the company updating the specs to reflect what the game is. The previous system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition were based on older hardware and graphics technology. While those specs may have reflected what Minecraft needed in the past, they no longer represent what the game needs to run well today.
That’s why we’re increasing the minimum and recommended system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition. The new requirements include more memory, more powerful processors, and graphics hardware compatible with Vulkan 1.3.
The Minecraft team wanted to make sure that if someone started the game and chose the Fast graphics setting, they would get 30 FPS at 1080p resolution as the absolute minimum. As such, the minimum requirements are now:

The recommended requirements will allow someone to play with the Fancy graphics preset at 1080p resolution at 60 FPS. To achieve this you will need:

This is less because Minecraft is getting a big graphical update and more because the previous system requirements no longer reflected what the game was like. As someone who loves to play on heavily modded servers, I can attest that 8GB of RAM is actually enough for Minecraft these days, so it was worth adjusting the requirements to reflect reality.
