Just like on desktop, Chrome for Android now lets you customize the New Tab page with a background image or theme.
To set up, open the three-dot overlay menu from what Google calls the “home page” and tap “Customize new tab page” near the bottom. This sheet already allows you to control shortcuts, cards, and the Discover feed.
Appearance is the new thing today with “Chrome Default” as the dynamic color theme. Uploading an image opens the system file chooser, while Chrome Colors offers nine tri-color options. “Update daily” will cycle through all the options.
Thematic collections house landscapes, architecture, land, patterns, illustrations and gradients, each offering 4-5 images.
Once you choose an image, the background of your New Tab page will update, and the rest of Chrome’s interface, like the tab launcher, will have a similar theme.
Custom backgrounds are rolling out via a server-side update with Chrome 150. If you don’t see the message “You can now personalize your home page: Make Chrome your own by choosing a custom theme,” force stop the browser from the app info.
Today, we are seeing this widely implemented. This was released on Chrome for iOS in April.
