If you saw the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again second season and I was like, “Wait, I thought I put on Disney+, not CNN,” that wasn’t intentional. In fact, the program continues a well financed, well armed super evil group called the Anti-Vigilance Task Force whose job is to hunt down and imprison people who their boss, Mayor Fisk, considers to be problems. But any parallel with a real life group doing that in the United States They are pure coincidence, at least according to Marvel.
talking to Variety At the show’s premiere earlier this week, Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum addressed how the show certainly feels more relevant than ever. “Any kind of reflection on reality is a coincidence,” Winderbaum said. “But Stan Lee said that Marvel reflects the world outside our window. Sometimes things just take on a life of their own.”
Television certainly It has a life of its own, and that is something that supports Winderbaum’s claim. Daredevil: Born Again The second season was written “almost two years ago,” according to the exchange. So while then-former President Donald Trump was certainly running to become president again around that time, he had not yet won, much less unleashed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (aka ICE) on cities across the country. It’s simply something that people in power have done throughout history. So, yes, Marvel is mirroring the world.
And yet, it is difficult to read that statement and not think of a recent statement from the Andor showrunner, Tony Gilroy. Gilroy also wrote a program that reflected the world around him and, months later, revealed that Disney told him not to use the word “fascism.” I didn’t want to ruffle any more feathers than I already would and hoped to let the work speak for itself.
Daredevil: Born Again does just that and will continue to do so throughout the season. And while, by definition, the show’s parallels to the real world may not have been written as a specific, targeted commentary on ICE and President Trump, it would be pretty heroic to lean a little more into “coincidence.” That’s probably what Daredevil would want.
The premiere of Daredevil: Born Again The second season is now on Disney+. New episodes appear weekly.
