Developed and published by Seed Sparkle Lab, Starsand Island has all the makings of a classic, cozy game. The customizable player character has left the hustle and bustle of urban life to nostalgically return to his childhood hometown on Starsand Island. After the player chooses between a male or female protagonist, they are greeted by a very solid character creator.
Almost everything can be customized from the start, including hairstyle and color, eye style and color, moles, freckles, and more. The clothing options are a little sparse at first, but don’t worry, that’s a problem that will be fixed later. After examining the character creator’s countless options, it’s time to reacquaint yourself with the family home. Your childhood best friend, Solana, is there to welcome you and help you settle back into life on the island.
Although the Starsand Island starter home is not as depreciated as starter homes in similar titles, it is certainly a bit extra cozy. It’s small, okay? Really small. But it doesn’t have to remain that way. Like any high-life simulator, Starsand Island starts the player character with some of his grandparents’ heirlooms. In this case, it’s a trusty old workbench where you can craft an ax and pickaxe from sticks and stones you picked up from the garden. It’s a little rudimentary, but it works in those early days until you create something a little more punchy.
Before you know it, you’ll be chopping down trees and making furniture, and while it’s a great way to spend your free time, there’s actually a lot more to do. Starsand Island is filled with people from all walks of life, each made to feel real and committed to their own routines, stories, and interests. Chatting and giving gifts to locals unlocks new story beats, quests, and even romantic possibilities.
Some of the town’s inhabitants can also help you choose and advance through the game’s different career paths, all of which will help you become a self-sufficient farmer and productive member of the community. Pastelle, the local rancher, is kind and sweet, but she is also willing to share her love of animals with you. Advancing your ranching career under Pastelle’s mentorship unlocks livestock for your farm.
Cows and sheep can provide milk, but you must ensure that all their needs are met, including housing, food, and hygiene. Chickens and ducks can provide eggs, but they will also help keep your garden free of pests. Rabbits may be adorable, but they are also vital for keeping your garden weed-free. Livestock can be purchased or bred, which can lead to the discovery of unique variants that produce different byproducts.
Like the Rancher Career, the Fisherman Career can provide animal byproducts (such as fish meat) that can be used to make delicious recipes, or you can work on selectively breeding fish to fill the island’s aquarium.
In total, Starsand Island offers players five career paths: ranching, farming, crafting, exploration, and fishing. Each track starts the player as a trainee and requires completion of tests to obtain certification. Completing each trial leads to new blueprints and tools for completing more trials.
Running errands for mentors and helping the people of Starsand Island also opens up romantic possibilities, and there are plenty of eligible bachelors and bachelorettes across the island to woo with gifts and small talk, including some memorable family favorites. My time in Portia series. Players of the My Time series will recognize Nia, Gust, Ginger, and Fang when they arrive on the island.
Even in its early access state, Starsand Island is packed with content. Players can charter a yacht to go fishing on nearby islands for the day, or go on a mining adventure and take on giant rock monsters lurking in the caves of the Moonlit Forest. There’s always something to do in this huge open world, and a new roadmap recently released by Seed Sparkle Lab indicates that there’s a lot more on the way in the coming months.
He roadmap includes plans for an improved NPC dating system in April, mod support in May, and cooperative multiplayer in June.
