WhatsApp is introducing several new features in iOS and Androidincluding AI-assisted message writing and AI-powered photo retouching before shipping, dual account support on iOS and the option to transfer full chat history from iOS to Android. Meta announced these updates but did not specify a timeline for their implementation.
AI writing assistance and photo retouching on WhatsApp
The writing help function offers suggested answers based on the current conversation. Meta explains that this feature works using Private processing technologya system that allows Meta AI to generate responses without reading the message content or suggested rewrites. Additionally, WhatsApp now allows users to touch up images with Meta AI before sharing them in chats or groups.
Meta has not specified what retouching options are available nor has it indicated whether images are sent to Meta’s servers before delivery. Both features rely on Meta AI and share the same underlying infrastructure, although Meta highlights private processing as the privacy boundary specifically for written help.
New cross-platform and multi-account features in WhatsApp
WhatsApp now supports running two accounts simultaneously on iOS. This feature has been available on Android for some time. The iOS version works similarly to Android, allowing users to switch between accounts within the same app without needing to log out.
WhatsApp is now supported transferring chat history between iOS and Android devices. This feature includes individual and group chats, call history, channel history, and community history. Previously, cross-platform transfer options were limited depending on the platform mix. Meta describes the process as simple to complete with just a few taps, but no specific instructions for starting the transfer are included in the ad.
Storage and security updates on WhatsApp
WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that helps users locate large media files within individual chats. The goal is to help users free up storage space on their devices without the need to delete entire conversations. Meta has not provided details on the minimum qualifying file size or whether the tool displays results for all chats at once or requires browsing each chat separately.
Recent WhatsApp updates have introduced several security-focused features. In March, the platform launched parent-managed accounts for tweens, allowing parents to control who can communicate with their children and which groups they can join. Meta also added scam detection that warns users when behavioral signals suggest a potentially fraudulent device pairing request.
In January, Meta began rolling out. an advanced locking mode for WhatsApp, designed specifically for journalists, public figures and others at higher risk of targeted threats, including spyware.
Meta has not announced a specific date when all of these features will be available to all users.
