OpenAI has added support for plugins to its Codex agent coding application in an apparent attempt to match similar features offered by competitors Anthropic (in Claude Code) and Google (in the Gemini command-line interface).
What OpenAI calls “plugins” are actually packages that can include skills (“prompts describing workflows for Codex,” a standard feature in tools like this these days), application integrations, and MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers.
The idea is that they allow Codex to be configured in certain ways so that specific tasks are easier for the user and replicable between multiple users in an organization.
In general, they do not allow anything that was not possible before. Advanced users could already enter custom instructions, use MCP servers, etc. to create much of this functionality. But in this case, it is basically a one-click installation.
There is now a plugins section in the Codex app that takes users to a searchable plugin library intended to allow Codex to integrate tightly with some external service or application; examples include GitHub, Gmail, Box, Cloudflare, and Vercel.
