Google just announced Wear OS 6.1 and added a time zone feature I’ve wanted for years

What you need to know

  • Wear OS 6.1 adds location-based time zone detection, allowing watches to update the time without a paired phone.
  • The update is based on Android 16 QPR2 and does not bring any major changes visible to the UI.
  • Other new features include child account “graduation” and improved reauthentication without factory reset.

Google quietly announced Wear OS 6.1 today, bringing a small but useful location-based time feature that arguably should have arrived much sooner.

Visually, Google hasn’t revealed any UI changes with Wear OS 6.1, but has confirmed that the update is based on Android 16Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) at API level 36.1. This is not the last Android 16 QPR3 March Updatebut rather the December 2025 Android 16 QPR2 build.
