This one is for the 90s kids: KA Applegate’s Animorphs books is finally getting a new TV show, courtesy of Disney+.
In the executive producer’s chair is Ryan Coogler through his Proximity Media banner. By VarietyThe program is in its early stages of development with The wills writer Bryan Wolcott will be on hand to write and executive produce. After Nickelodeon two seasons adaptationHollywood turned its eyes to adapting this again in 2020 as a feature film. Those plans eventually stalled, paving the way for this new show. Neither Applegate nor co-creator (and husband) Michael Grant were involved in that film or the Nick show, and it’s unclear if they’ll be involved here.
First released in 1996, Animorphs Centering on five teenagers who gain the ability to transform into any animal they touch. They use their powers to stop a race of mind-controlling parasitic aliens called Yeerks from taking over Earth. Applegate and Grant told this story over 54 books until the series ended in 2001, and it was known for being pretty good, pretty strange and dark, and for having a cool cover showing the transformation process. Scholastic has been adapting the books into graphic novels, with the sixth book, the capture, having launched last year.
With animorphs, Disney continues its gradual control to bring children’s books from the 90s and 2000s to television. The third season of Percy Jackson will arrive later in 2026, and there’s also a TV show for Eragon in process too. What’s next? Artemis Fo—Oh, sure.
