US Mobile is teasing a major hybrid mobile plan that opts for Starlink as its home Internet provider. The company says it may not use Starlink in the future as more options become available, but the plan it’s launching will cost less than $50 with no data cap.
US Mobile CEO Ahmed Khattak taken to reddit to share some crucial news about the company’s upcoming announcement. The trailer included important details about an upcoming mobile/home hybrid plan with Starlink, and why something like this is so difficult to put together.
What that means for customers is a US mobile data plan that covers all major networks in the US, Canada and Mexico. With that, Ahmed says users will get a miniature dish for Starlink Internet to “take anywhere.” Starlink already sells these smaller receivers for more mobile customers and they have become a vital tool when a connection is needed in remote areas.
A Starlink Mini receiver is seen in marketing images that one commenter claims to have obtained. Take pictures with a grain of salt before full announcement.
The post also notes that the Starlink portion of the plan will not include a data cap, all while you’re under that $50 a month subscription. Many of the details are still missing, such as what the moving part of the plan will look like and whether the listed price is entry or a set entry point. Starlink’s own website lists a subscription cost of $50 per month for a 100Mbps residential plan, so bundling mobile coverage in any capacity seems like a cost-saving measure for users.
The CEO also acknowledges his choice to partner with Starlink. Its entry can be read on Reddit, but it essentially states that Starlink is the best option and that bringing its capabilities to users takes priority over opting for a worse network.
The satellite network we are integrating with is, at this time, the best LEO option on the planet. Refusing to integrate it would mean offering our customers a worse product to make a statement. That’s not a tradeoff I’m willing to make on your behalf.
The company also insists that Starlink will not be a partner forever. As better LEOs begin to emerge, US Mobile will explore options to work with better services to pass that performance on to customers.
This is not the first time mobile providers have partnered with Starlink. T-Mobile has previously used the company to add satellite service to its coverage, called T-satellite.
US Mobile plans to announce final details on April 9.
