Microsoft Teams is finally solving those awkward “can you hear me?” moments

Summary

  • Teams adds a pre-join microphone and speaker test so you can listen and correct audio before joining meetings.

  • The launch is planned for May 2026, as indicated in the Microsoft 365 roadmap.

  • It will allow you to record and play a short clip to confirm your audio quality before speaking.

It’s the nightmare of every remote worker plagued with social anxiety; You attend a public meeting, unmute your microphone when it is your turn to speak, and begin your well-planned speech. Suddenly, the chat is filled with messages about your microphone being too quiet or too loud, or maybe it sounds like you’re underwater for some reason. Now you have to fix that before you can save your talk.

Well, Microsoft Teams finally gets a feature that apps like Zoom have had for years. Before joining a call, you’ll be able to listen to your microphone to make sure everything sounds good before you even see anyone.

Microsoft Teams is finally getting a microphone overhaul

Although it won’t be out for a while.

To keep everyone informed about what it’s planning, the Redmond giant curates the Microsoft 365 roadmap. This monitors what the company is working on and informs both users and system administrators what to expect in the future.

Today, Microsoft added a feature to the roadmap Which, honestly, I’m a little surprised that it took me so long to add:

Microsoft Teams: Test your microphone before joining

Before joining a meeting on the pre-join screen, you can test your microphone and speaker to make sure others can hear you clearly. Select Test microphone and speaker to record a short audio clip and play it. This helps you confirm that the correct devices have been selected and that you (and others) will be heard once the meeting begins.

You won’t be able to see this new feature yet, as Microsoft says it intends to roll it out in May 2026. However, it won’t be long until you can finally take an audio test before heading to that important meeting.

Microsoft can finally make Microsoft Teams less of a slow mess

Big emphasis on “may.”
