Capcom’s classic horror games can now be played on Linux Proton – here’s how to try them early

Summary

  • Proton Experimental now runs classic Capcom horror (Resident Evil 1 and 2, Dino Crisis 1 and 2) on Linux/Steam Deck.

  • Many other classics and fixes made it to the update; Check out the full changelog for more playable titles.

  • Enable Proton Experimental via Properties > Compatibility to test these kits before the main Proton builds the ship.

It was great to see Dino Crisis finally land on Steam earlier this year. Any effort to preserve the classics, clunky or not, should be applauded, as they show us how far games have come since their inception. However, there was only one problem; While Dino Crisis 1 and 2 were selling on Steam, they didn’t want to play well on Linux or the Steam Deck.

This was because the games didn’t fit with Proton, the compatibility layer that Linux uses to translate Windows-based games to a format you like better. Well, the good news is that the Proton community has been working hard to get some of Capcom’s classic horror games running on Proton, and you can try them out right now if you want.

As you can imagine from the name of the post, this will help games run better on Valve’s portable gaming device; however, it will also include anyone who plays on Linux using Proton. what is a batch from Linux gamers.

The latest Proton Experimental update adds some new titles to the playable range, and there are some really good games:

Now playable: De Dust, Metal Fatigue, METAL GEAR SURVIVE, Warhammer: Vermintide 2, Blaite, Don’t Die Dateless, Dummy!, Resident Evil (1996), Resident Evil 2 (1998), Dino Crisis, Dino Crisis 2, Universe Generator: The Golden Sword.

Yes, that’s the original Resident Evil 1 and 2 along with Dino Crisis 1 and 2. This patch is a great addition for anyone looking to get scared, no matter if you’re at home playing on CachyOS or out and about on the Steam Deck. Furthermore, there is a ton of corrections for other titles, so be sure to give the full changelog a read to see if your bugbear issue is fixed.

If you want to try these games before they hit the main branch, be sure to install Proton Experimental in your Steam library. Next, right-click the game you want to use Proton Experimental on, select Properties > Compatibility, check “Force use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” and select Proton Experimental.
