Google has updated the AI mode in Chromeadding two new features: a split-screen view that allows users to keep AI Mode open along with any site they visit from search results, and a context menu that allows users to directly open tabs, local PDF files, and images in an AI Mode query.
The update is gradually rolling out to users in the United States on both mobile and desktop devices.
How Chrome AI mode side-by-side browsing works
When a user clicks a link in an AI Mode search result on desktop, Chrome now opens that page in a side-by-side view instead of replacing the AI Mode panel. AI mode remains visible and active on one side while the linked page loads on the other, making it easy to ask follow-up questions about the content without leaving search results.
Using the Plus menu for crosstab context and where it is available
A new plus button in the AI mode search box allows users to add context from sources beyond the current query. This includes recently opened tabs, local PDF files, and images. After selecting these sources, AI Mode can synthesize information, compare data, or identify patterns across all of them at once.
Google also offers Canvas and image creation tools through the same Plus menu. This allows users to access AI-powered creative tools from anywhere in Chrome without needing to open a separate app or interface.
The update is currently rolling out in the United States for desktop and mobile versions of Chrome. Google has not provided a timeline for when it will be available in other regions.
