X is closing communities due to low usage and high spam


Released in 2021When the company was still known as Twitter, communities were intended to provide users of the social network with a place to connect with each other around shared interests. Now, X is closing the feature forever, saying it was overrun with spam and was a pain to manage.

“Communities had great insight but were used by less than 0.4% of users, yet they contributed to 80% of spam, financial scams and malware reports on X,” Bier. wrote at X, explaining the company’s thinking behind removing the high-profile feature.

“Of the handful of communities that were successful, most were user acquisition channels for Kick or compensated clipper communities.”
