OpenAI updates ChatGPT and Codex with GPT-5.5: ‘a new kind of intelligence for real work’

OpenAI closes out a busy week of announcements with the release of GPT-5.5, its latest update model for ChatGPT and Codex. The company calls its new model “a new kind of intelligence for real work.”

OpenAI says GPT-5.5 is its smartest and most intuitive to use model yet

GPT-5.5 arrives seven weeks after the release of GPT-5.4, which arrive on March 5.

OpenAI says the newer model “understands what you’re trying to do faster” and can “do more work on itself” compared to previous models.

Specifically, OpenAI says GPT-5.5 is better at multi-part tasks that require multiple steps, such as planning, using tools, and checking your work.

OpenAI highlights the gains in these areas with GPT-5.5:

  • agent coding
  • computer use
  • knowledge work
  • first scientific investigations

The company says GPT-5.5 offers improvements in these areas without losing speed or using more tokens.

API pricing changes with GPT-5.5

However, GPT-5.5 comes with a Price 2 times higher for the use of API As GPT-5.4, OpenAI notes:

While GPT-5.5 is priced higher than GPT-5.4, it is smarter and much more token-efficient. At Codex, we’ve carefully tuned the experience so that GPT-5.5 delivers better results with fewer tokens than GPT-5.4 for most users, while still offering generous usage across all subscription levels.

API pricing for GPT-5.5:

  • Entry: $5.00 / 1 million tokens
  • Cache entry: $0.50 / 1 million tokens
  • Exit: $30.00 / 1 million tokens

API pricing for GPT-5.4:

  • Cache entry: $0.25 / 1 million tokens
  • Exit: $15.00 / 1 million tokens

OpenAI also includes a note about GPT-5.5 safeguards and trusted partners:

We are launching GPT-5.5 with our strongest set of safeguards to date, designed to reduce misuse while preserving access for beneficial work. We evaluated this model across our entire suite of security and preparedness frameworks, worked with internal and external redteamers, added specific tests for advanced cybersecurity and biology capabilities, and gathered feedback on real-world use cases from nearly 200 trusted early access partners before launch.

GPT-5.5 Thinking and professionalism

GPT-5.5 includes Thinking and Pro model variants.

OpenAI says Thinking “unlocks faster help for harder problems, with smarter, more concise answers to help you move through complex work more efficiently.”

Meanwhile, the company says early reviewers praise Pro for being a “step forward in both the difficulty and quality of work ChatGPT can perform, with latency improvements that make it much more practical for demanding tasks.”

The release comes with a fun 40-second video showing off GPT-5.5 on Codex:
