Original Xbox emulation is now possible on Androidand with devices like the AYN Thor pushing portable performance even further, it was only a matter of time before enthusiasts turned their attention to Xbox.
It has long been limited to MacOS, linuxand Windows on the emulation side, but now, with a little tweaking, you can also have an original Xbox emulator running on Android. There are some caveats, however, so let’s go over the project and what you should expect.
Now, I’ll start by saying that the emulators themselves are legal. However, the way people get games to run often isn’t.
However, there are legal ways to do this. For example, you can own the original physical copy and dispose of it yourself.
That being said, what the developers have managed to achieve here is truly impressive. The Android emulator is based on Hemua well-known original Xbox emulator that already runs on Windows, Linux and macOS.
This version of Android is not made by the official Xemu developers. Instead, it exists because the emulator is open source, meaning other developers can fork the project and adapt it to different platforms.
At this time, there are two versions available. One is a paid version on Google Play Store, while another version can be downloaded for free and downloaded from GitHub.
Performance, however, remains a bit iffy. Retro gaming body I tried several titles on a Retroid Pocket 6, starting with Blinx, which unfortunately wasn’t very playable.
The same type of problems appear with Crazy Taxi, which also has difficulty working properly.
Halo: Combat Evolved is a bit more playable, although it still has noticeable slowdowns. One of the best performers seems to be Otogi: Myth of Demons, which runs faster than many of the other games tested.
Still, it’s clear that performance isn’t perfect yet. It’s still early days for the project and honestly, it’s impressive that it works on Android hardware.
Do you think the original Xbox emulation on Android is good or are you not interested and would prefer nothing was done?
