An erroneous message heard by some Google Home users seemed to imply that automations were disappearing, which would have been crazy. Fortunately, that’s not the case, but Google Home will soon remove your phone-related actions.
Some users I have noticed In recent days, its smart speakers and displays have said:
…just so you know, phone actions and automations will no longer be available starting the first week of May.
Obviously, that is very worrying. Automations are a enormous part of Google Home, and which has improved a lot in recent months. As such, it would be absolutely crazy for Google to suddenly pull the rug out from under it, but that’s not the case.
Google confirmed in response to an affected user that home automations are No They disappear, but certain actions do. During the first week of May (coming soon), Google Home will stop supporting phone-related automations. These include setting Do Not Disturb mode, reading the battery percentage, changing the volume, and more.
Google says:
We wanted to clarify that we will not be removing automations in May. We’re removing phone-related actions from automations (i.e. checking battery level, setting/unsetting Do Not Disturb, and setting your phone’s volume). Home automations will continue to work and any home-related actions will still be part of your automations and will be fully functional.
It is likely that the message was only read by users who were using any of these functions but, in any case, automations as a whole are not going to disappear. We’d also wager to assume that the phone-related automations in Home weren’t used that frequently anyway – they can only be used if you start the automation on your phone, and don’t apply if you’re using something like a Nest Hub.
