Microsoft plans to start the rollout of the May 2026 security update for windows 11 in Tuesday, May 12, 2026. In the fifth month of the year, the software giant is pushing new features, improvements to the existing experience, and security fixes.
In this quality update, the company finally releases the long-awaited xbox mode. Officially, this feature started Launching April 30. with this update version.

New Windows 11 features will arrive in May
The company uses the Controlled Feature Deployment (CFR) technology to gradually roll out new improvements, so it may take some time before you see them.
1. Xbox mode game function
Starting with the May Patch Tuesday update, Microsoft will finally make Xbox Mode available for regular PCs, but it is currently available in select markets.
The feature transforms your laptop, desktop, or tablet into a console-like experience using the Xbox app in full-screen mode. Once the feature is enabled, upon reboot and after logging in, the device will automatically enter the mode with a controller-friendly interface similar to the Xbox dashboard, allowing you to launch and play games without the usual clutter.
Plus, this mode is more than just automatically launching an app. This new experience prioritizes resources to improve the gaming experience by reducing background activity and distractions. According to the company, Xbox mode can free up up to 2 GB of memory.
The feature is available in Settings > Gaming > xbox mode. On this page, you will have to activate the “Enable Xbox mode” flip the switch and select the xbox application (if applicable).
2. File Explorer improvements
As part of this wave of changes, File Explorer will receive a number of improvements.
First, the company is expanding support for file formats that can be used in File Explorer to include uu, cpio, xar, and NuGet (nupkg) packages.
In folders such as Downloads and Documents, the “View” and “Classify” The preferences will be used when applications launch File Explorer directly in those locations.
Additionally, this update fixes a white flash when opening the “This PC” page or resizing the “Details” page while in dark mode.
3. Haptic feedback effects
In the Settings app, from the “Haptic signals” page, you can now control haptic feedback effects on supported devices for specific actions, such as adjusting and resizing windows and aligning objects in PowerPoint.
These effects are currently supported on Surface Slim Pen 2, ASUS Pen 3.0, and MSI Pen 2 with haptic feedback.
Microsoft plans to provide support for Logitech MX Master 4, but this will come later as Logitech releases updates.
4. Voice typing improvements
On the touch keyboard, Voicy Typing elements are being reworked. The new design eliminates the full screen overlay and displays the voice typing animation on the dictation key.
5. New keyboard layout
Microsoft is making a new 101 Legacy Arabic keyboard layout available, which you can add from the “Region” page in the Settings app.
6. Changes to the delivery tray
Starting with the May 2026 security update, the Drag Tray feature becomes “Drop Tray” and Microsoft is also relocating the feature to Settings > System > Multitask.
If you don’t like this feature because you don’t like how it interrupts your flow when dragging a file, you can now turn it off from the “Multitask” page.
7. Taskbar compatible with new AI agents
Perhaps one of the most important additions of this update is the new support for monitoring AI agents from the taskbar.
If your computer supports working with AI agents, you will now be able to check what the agent is doing from the taskbar without opening the application. Microsoft points out that this integration will arrive for the first time in microsoft 365 Copilot app, where the investigation agent can now show live progress while generating a report.
Simply hover over the AI agent in the taskbar to check the progress. In this case, when the report is finished, you will receive a notification.
8. Release policy with dynamic list support
Although the operating system has included the “Remove default packages from Microsoft Store” policy for some time now includes a dynamic list option that allows you to specify additional MSIX and APPX applications to remove from the system.
This policy is intended for organizations to give administrators granular control over default applications beyond the standard list.
9. Windows Driver Policy Update
In May, the company plans to update the way the kernel trusts third-party drivers.
For example, the default trust for cross-signed drivers no longer exists, while drivers in the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP) and a list of trusted legacy drivers will still be allowed.
It is important to note that before applying changes, the operating system will test driver compatibility for at least 100 hours and three reboots.
After control measures, some drivers may be blocked with crossed signals.
10. Batch file security changes
The update that Microsoft is preparing for Windows 11 also includes security improvements to batch files and command prompt scripts to minimize the risks of runtime manipulation.
Starting with this update, network administrators and Enterprise Application Control policy authors can now enable a strengthened processing mode for batch files. When enabled, this mode locks batch files during execution, preventing any modifications and reducing the risk of runtime manipulation.
The feature can be configured through the Registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor creating the Lock batch files when in use DWORD and setting its value to 1 (wear 0 to keep it disabled).
Alternatively, the same behavior can be enforced using the Lock batch files when in use application manifest control, as defined in the Enterprise Application Control schema.
11. Format FAT32 up to 2TB
Finally, another change worth mentioning is the new update to the format command line tool, which now allows you to format volumes up to 2TB using FAT32.
Previously, you could only format volumes up to 32 GB.

I walked away from the Windows 11 May 2026 Update feeling like Microsoft had finally struck the right balance between useful updates and daily polish.
Xbox Mode is the feature that caught my attention first because it really makes my PC feel like a console when I want it to. File Explorer feels faster, folder views are finally consistent, and expanded file support saves me from having to install additional tools.
Even small details, like smarter AI in the taskbar and stricter driver rules, make the operating system feel more intentional. It’s not a flashy update, but as I tested everything, I kept noticing small improvements that add up.
