Subnautica 2 launches in early access on May 14 for PC and Xbox, with no confirmed release for PS5

Subnautica 2 will enter early access on May 14, 2026 for PC and Xbox Series X|S. The game will be available in Xbox Game Pass from day one. The PlayStation 5and developer Unknown Worlds has not announced any release date for the platform.

Why Subnautica 2 is not launching on PS5 and its launch prospects

PlayStation does not offer an early access or game preview program similar to those available on PC and Xbox. Unknown Worlds is using the early access phase to gather player feedback without aiming for a fully polished release. This development approach conflicts with PlayStation platform requirements. The early access period is expected to last between two and three years.

Unknown Worlds hasn’t ruled out a PS5 release, but hasn’t made any public statements about PlayStation’s plans during the early access phase. The original Subnautica was released for PC in January 2018 and then came to consoles in December of the same year. The developer has taken a cross-platform approach across its entire catalogue. Subnautica 2 is built on unreal engine 5which supports PS5 development, making a future port technically feasible.

If the early access period continues as planned until 2028 or 2029, a PS5 release will likely occur after the full launch. However, Unknown Worlds has not confirmed this timeline or committed to a PlayStation release at any point.
