NordVPN has introduced an AI Voice Detector feature in its Chrome browser extension. The tool listens to the audio of active tabs in real time and determines whether the voices are human or AI-generated. It operates entirely on the user’s device, without sending audio to external servers.
The feature was created in collaboration with NordLabs, NordVPN’s research team, using a model trained with thousands of voice samples from both humans and AI-generated voices.
How NordVPN’s AI Voice Detector works and why it’s important
Once enabled in the NordVPN Chrome extension, the detector captures audio from the active tab without interrupting playback. It uses a local neural network to analyze the acoustic characteristics of the audio stream and provides a classification that is displayed both in the extension’s interface and in a small notification on the web page.
Results are indicated with a three-color system: green for human speech, red for AI-generated voices, and amber for audio that may be synthetic but cannot be classified with complete confidence. Detection focuses on acoustic properties rather than spoken content.
This feature does not transcribe, record, or interpret speech and does not have access to browsing history, cookies, or account information. All temporary audio buffers are removed once detection is completed or the tab is closed.
AI voice cloning tools are now widely available that can recreate a person’s voice from a few seconds of recorded audio. These tools have been used in scams involving fake calls, spoofing attempts, and videos with synthetic narration. Deepfake voice scams have caused significant financial losses around the world, with the United States being one of the most attacked markets.
AI Voice Detector is currently available in the NordVPN extension for Chrome through the Chrome Web Store.
