Now, it looks like Microsoft has plans to refine the Xbox Dashboard UI on consoles, PCs, and handheld devices like the Xbox Ally also. in a new video which summarizes Microsoft’s GDC keynote showing the technical features of Project Helix and providing a clearer view of the presentation slides, an image of the Xbox interfaces can be seen with some notable differences from what is being streamed today (visible above).
In particular, these user interface designs are not entirely uniform across different devices, and that’s by design. While showing this slide during his keynote presentation, Jason Ronald, vice president of Xbox devices and gaming ecosystem at Microsoft, noted that the interfaces have small differences “because we think about things like screen size or input modalities.”
Still, Ronald and the Xbox team’s goal is to address the fact that there is “a lot of fragmentation within the experience” by making ecosystem interfaces as similar as possible, ensuring that it doesn’t feel jarring or awkward to switch between console, PC, handheld, and the cloud.
“What the team has been doing behind the scenes is working hard to deliver a consistent experience, so it feels very familiar and very distinctively Xbox no matter where you choose to play,” he said.
Ultimately, even if these changes are fairly minor overall, I’m still glad they were made, as I think it’s important for Xbox to look and feel like Xbox no matter what device or platform you’re using to interact with it. It will also be interesting to see if any more changes come, as these interfaces are still in progress. Only time will tell.
