This year, Apple is rumored to make a code cleanup for iOS 27as well as generally having a renewed focus on stability and performance, plus a host of Apple Intelligence features. While this alone sounds good, I think there’s a bigger reason why we should expect an impressively stable launch.
Love it or hate it, agent coding has substantially sped up the software development process. Towards the end of last year, the models started to get noticeably good, and we’re now at a point where you can have a model that performs reliably on complete tasks and handles them mostly well. And, according to Mark Gurman, Apple is all in on the use of anthropic models for product development.
Does this mean we’ll see an iOS 27 full of junk? Most likely not. I still expect Apple to have its usual level of hesitation towards new technologies. Engineers are still (hopefully) reviewing every line of code, but the fact that it is allowed to be used internally is a great sign.
The prospect that engineers can use Claude to handle the low-hanging fruit and instead focus all their energy on the challenging problems is incredibly exciting. Especially since, for the most part, iOS 27 will be feature-light outside of Siri and Apple Intelligence. In theory, that means most teams will be able to redouble their efforts to improve performance.
Wrap
There have been many rumors over the year that Apple is focusing on performance in iOS and many times that amounts to almost nothing. This year, however, I feel incredibly optimistic about it. Historically, Apple has had a bottleneck when it comes to software engineers, but if each engineer is much more productive with AI, perhaps a lot more will be done this year. You can have hope.
