Someone turned an LED light into a live Code Claude status indicator, and you can too

Summary

  • This mod turns a Moonside LED lamp into a Code Claude colored status indicator.

  • Navy blue means it is working, Sunset handle means it is idle and purple means it needs user intervention.

  • It works via macOS BLE and is best used specifically with Moonside Halo.

One thing I’ve learned from using Claude Code is that sometimes you just have to let Claude do the cooking. Ideally, Claude will generate a ton of code in an instant, but sometimes he needs to ruminate a little more, which usually means it’s time to get up and grab a cup of coffee. But what if you wanted to know what Claude does without being tied to the monitor?

Enter this mod for an LED lamp that turns it into a Code Claude status indicator. Now you don’t have to sit and wait for Claude to finish; Just take a quick look at your desktop and you’ll know what’s going on at any time.

With some caveats

This cool little project comes to us through MoutainSnow (sic), who took the Code Claude Subreddit to show it off. They say they’ve seen other people convert their Moonside LED lamps into Claude Code color-coded status indicators in the past and wanted to try it themselves. From what you see in the video, I would say they did an excellent job.

The code was created by bobek-balinek on GitHubwhich has a full page of the “Claude Lamp” project. There, you can check out the setup guide, see all the code, and get this cool lamp working in your own home, just like MoutainSnow did.

This is what each color means:

State

Lamp

Trigger

Labor

BEAT2 Theme (White/Navy)

Fast shipping, use of tools

Idle

Solid Sunset Handle

Claude finishes answering, login.

Need information

Solid Purple

Permit request, plan approval, question, notification.

Off

LED off

End of session

There are some caveats about this project. Firstly, it seems to only work with Moonside lamps, with Halo being the best option. The creator says it “should work with One, Aurora, Lighthouse, etc.”, but that doesn’t seem like much of a guarantee. Also, the project page lists supported operating systems as “macOS (BLE over CoreBluetooth)”, so if you’re using Windows or Linux, you might be out of luck. Anyway, this is a really cool little project and a great way to keep an eye on Claude.

I replaced the Claude Pro with a local 9B model for a week and finally figured out why I was paying $20 a month.

The gap was smaller than I expected.
