While Amazon has Middle Earth on televisionWarner Bros. is working to bring the lord of the rings Back to the big screen. We already know that two movies are coming, but Peter Jackson and the studio are already looking to dive even deeper into JRR Tolkien’s fantasy world.
During a recent Deadline In the interview, Jackson was asked how much gas the IP had left in the tank. The filmmaker noted that “the appendices will run out” sooner or later, and he would love to focus on Tolkien books that “would really make great movies.” In the past, the biggest obstacle was Tolkien’s son Christopher, who edited 24 volumes of his father’s work and did not bother with their film versions. But after Christopher’s passing in 2020, the rights to those other books were up for grabs; Jackson specifically mentions both. The Silmarillion and unfinished stories as material that he believes is ripe for cinema.
According to him, the younger Tolkiens who now run the property are “much more open” to others the lord of the rings books in the process of adaptation. He and the studio are currently in talks with board members about licensing the rights to “some of the other books,” and it’s something he’s really looking forward to. Jackson said candidly that it would be nice to “get away from the appendages and get something a little more substantial.”
Jackson’s comments are not surprising, given WB’s moves to dominate the fantasy market with Rings and a game of Thrones movie. The question, as Deadline understandably asks, is whether fans will “agree” as they generally did with the hobbit trilogy. we will have to wait The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum on December 17, 2027, and The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past some time later.
