One of the only 50th anniversary Surface Laptops has now been lost in the Microsoft void and it’s unclear if its owner will ever get the device back. Rhener Furtado was one of 50 winners who received a special edition Surface Laptop 7. That unit developed freezing issues and was sent to Microsoft for repair. But the device Microsoft shipped was a standard Surface Laptop 7 instead of the 50th Anniversary Surface Laptop.
Microsoft’s repair team told Furtado in writing that the fix was a “same drive repair.” Once that detail was confirmed, Furtado shipped the laptop. Microsoft technical support subsequently deemed the device “unrepairable” and sent a replacement unit. But the replacement was a standard Surface Laptop 7.

The Surface Laptop 7 shipped had the same basic specifications, such as RAM, SSD, and CPU, but it was not a 50th anniversary Surface Laptop.
Furtado has requested that the original device be returned repaired or unrepaired. At the time of publication, Furtado has not received a response regarding the status of the original device.

As Furtado explains it, The laptop is far from a standard Surface Laptop 7. It has a 1975 Microsoft logo and a gold Microsoft logo. It even has a special Start menu to celebrate Microsoft’s 50th anniversary.

I hope this article brings more attention to the situation. Microsoft is a big company, so it’s very likely that the people involved in manufacturing and shipping the 50th Anniversary Surface Laptop are unaware that this device was sent for repair.
Reddit’s reaction has been passionate and negative.

I contacted Microsoft for comment on the missing 50th anniversary Surface Laptop. I will update this article with an official message from the company.
Surface Laptop 7 Repairability
Microsoft clearly has work to do when it comes to making Surface devices repairable. Surface Laptop 7 received an 8/10 from iFixitwhich is a monumental leap from the original Surface Laptop and all previous models. iFixit called the first Surface Laptop a “glue-filled monster.”
“Surface Laptop 7 is a surprisingly easy-to-repair device, almost the antithesis of the original Surface Laptop. It’s no Framework 13, but it clearly takes inspiration from it,” iFixit said of the Surface Laptop 7.
The device is easy to open, has identification labels and allows access to various components for change or repair.
But Microsoft apparently didn’t make the Surface Laptop 7 repairable enough, because even its own technicians couldn’t fix Furtado’s problem. 50th Anniversary Surface Laptop.
Despite calling the necessary repairs in writing a “same unit repair,” Microsoft’s repair team deemed the device “non-repairable” and exchanged it for a standard Surface Laptop 7.
Without opening the device and having it checked by an expert, I cannot say for sure whether the unit was repairable or not. But what the Microsoft repair team did is not acceptable.
This is a special unit that celebrates Microsoft’s legacy. That legacy is now tarnished by the disappearance of the special device.
