I always know when gaming news has really broken containment when I see the BBC UK website inform about it and the pending closure of Destiny 2 has been considered high enough on the barometer of public interest to garner a whirlwind of coverage.
BungieThe announcement that active development of the live service will end with the June 9 Monument of Triumph update has sent shock waves through the gaming industry. While they’re not going offline completely (servers will remain online in a static state), the community refuses to allow a decade’s worth of memories to go on life support.
While fans lament Bungie’s difficult decision, resistance is also building, with a coordinated effort on two fronts. An online petition for Destiny 3 development will begin immediately, as well as a call to action for all Guardians past and present to log in on June 9 in solidarity and support.
A community that feels abandoned
A Change.org petition for sony to begin the development of Destiny 3 it already has more than 45,000 signatures. I added to that number because I feel like Destiny 3 would be incredibly marketable for Bungie.
The petition serves as a formal request to Sony and Bungie leaders to reconsider abandoning the intellectual property. For many of those who signed, the decision to stop working on the Destiny franchise represents an abandoned community, and there are some really candid comments on the page so far about how many bonds have been created through the game over the years.
“I’ve been playing Destiny since the alpha in 2014, I’ve been here for every expansion, usually buying the most expensive version so I could get all the content once it came out. This franchise has helped me make friends I never would have met and has gotten me through some really tough times in my life. I don’t want this world to end with Destiny 2; “There are many more stories and memories to be made if Bungie is given the time, resources, and proper leadership to create Destiny 3.” — Scott
No other game in my life has been as fun or meaningful. Every time I go to try something new, it doesn’t give me the same itch as the Destiny franchise. Once it’s over, it’ll likely take a big step back from gaming in general. I wish these huge corporations would stop ruining the things people love.

Destiny and Halo were the best games of our time! I played Destiny from the beginning. I’ve had the best gaming experiences with Destiny and the people I’ve met through it. Ending it abruptly isn’t fair to anyone. -Brandon
The Guardians meet on June 9
Simultaneously, a massive call to action has been posted on the Destiny subreddit. It urges all players, whether past, present, lapsed, or hardcore, to log into the game simultaneously on June 9. The goal is simply to flood the servers to break records for simultaneous players.
By creating an unprecedented spike in traffic on the day the final update drops, the community wants to provide Sony executives with an undeniable visual metric of the franchise’s value.
“We need to at least beat Marathon’s all-time high to show them they made the wrong decision. Heresy was awesome, Edge of Destiny’s story was interesting. They let this happen by doubling down on bad system changes and ignoring player feedback.
“It’s our last chance to send a message that the franchise is still valuable.”
Many fans are bitter because it seems that instead of investing in improving Destiny, Sony has decided to abandon the franchise to go all-in. Marathon.

Whether Destiny is a Marathon victim or not, I don’t know, but as someone who had some good times with friends in Destiny 2 In its infancy, I will also join the picket on June 9. While it’s unlikely to result in a corporate pivot, it will represent a large swath of players who have been touched by Destiny at some point. If you’re going to ride off into the sunset, your community will make sure you ride off strong.
