While many of the rumors about iOS 27 have focused on Apple Intelligence, Siri, and performance – There are reportedly a slew of updates to the Camera app, in addition to the redesign we saw last year with iOS 26. There will also be a number of new AI-enhanced editing tools in the Photos app.
Customizable camera user interface
Right now, the Camera app’s interface is fairly fixed, with controls only exposed as needed and the rest hidden in a menu. With iOS 27, Apple will allow users to adjust the controls that are displayed and you will be able to make the app better fit your needs. Of Bloomberg:
Apple Inc. plans to update its Camera app, making the software fully customizable as part of a broader set of user interface changes that will be included in its next iPhone software update.
With the new approach, users will be able to choose which features appear in the Camera app and where they are located. That includes flash, exposure, timer and resolution controls, according to people familiar with the matter.
These changes are apparently part of an effort to make the Camera app more suitable for professionals – with new advanced options added to the Camera app. The joystick, currently available at the top right, will also move to the right of the shutter button. by Mark Gurman.
Visual intelligence updates
This set of changes has two aspects. First, Apple will be integrating Visual Intelligence in the Camera app, in the form of a new Siri mode. This will expose many more users to Visual Intelligence, which can primarily be accessed in a separate app behind Camera Control. Users can also choose to add it to Control Center or assign it to their Action Button.
Second, Apple will add a Few new capabilities for Visual Intelligence. This will include the ability to scan food nutrition labels to record what you’re eating and scan contact information, such as a business card, to quickly create new contacts.
Starting with the cleanup tool introduced in iOS 18, Apple will add three new AI-enhanced editing tools in iOS 27: expand, improve and rethink.
Extend is kind of like Photoshop’s generative fill tool. Users will be able to “generate additional content beyond the original framework,” according to Bloomberg. Upscaling, on the other hand, will make your photos pop a little more, with improved color, lighting, and image quality. The last feature, Reframe, is intended to help users change the perspective of a space photo after taking it.
However, there is a caveat. According Bloomberg’s Mark GurmanExtend and Reframe “do not work reliably” and there is a chance that features could be delayed or reduced before their public release. That means these features may not be revealed at WWDC 2026. If they are, the company could delay them for a later developer beta, or possibly even iOS 27.1 or later.
