Whether or not you’ve seen Curry Barker’s Obsession, you know it becomes a horror movie as it goes on. As the second half continues, Bear can’t hide that he wants Nikki to be a completely different personeither for himself or for his circle of friends. And just as he tries to take a breath, he is thrown back into the reality he created…

the death of Sarah, Bear and Nikki’s friend. Just as the latter is about to confess her feelings for Bear, Wish Nikki literally jumps into the situation with a headbutt and then brutally slams Sarah’s face into a brick until she is unrecognizable. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Wish Nikki tells Bear that his friend’s fate depends on him.
The Hollywood Reporter interviewed Sarah actress Megan Lawless about her role in the film, including her gruesome death. When it was time to leave, she was thrilled to be able to leave in an “iconic way” and called it her favorite day on set. According to her, Nikki actress Inde Navarette used a helmeted wig to break the glass, then Lawless had to “bang” her head on the brick while Navarette simulated the repeated slamming of the door. After a certain point, the crew swapped out Lawless for a doll version to fill out the rest of the scene and the close-up of Sarah’s battered face.
“We had two takes to get it right,” Lawless said of his death. “The whole sequence is just fun. We had to act out something that seemed a little silly, but with 100 percent commitment. (…) I feel honored to have such an iconic death scene in this movie that no one will forget.” Despite that, she admitted to being surprised by obsession The TIFF screening and his death were met with cheers. Unexpected, but something he took in stride because horror fans are crazy and he loves that about them.
Much of the online chatter about Obsession has been about Sarah’s fate and her relationship with Bear and Nikki. Like Bear actor Michael Johnston, Lawless believes his characters could have had something under different circumstances. But he also doesn’t like the idea of Sarah or Nikki being villains (Bear, on the other hand…), nor does he think Sarah would have made a move while the other two were still in a relationship. Even the idea of them actually going through with the kiss that Wish Nikki interrupted at the party is something Lawless believes “goes against everything Sarah believes in.”
