Google’s enterprise release notes confirm that this milestone is focused on improving backend stability, applying security patches, and performing a critical certificate provisioning migration ahead of the next long-term support baseline.
What’s really changing in ChromeOS 148?
The major upgrade involves migrating the certificate provisioning system. Google is transitioning administrators from the old certificate enrollment methods to the new Certificate Provisioning API, which was first introduced in ChromeOS 142. This legacy system will be completely removed by the end of 2026.
This change is most relevant for business and school IT administrators who manage a large number of Chromebooks. Administrators affected by this update should ensure that their network authentication is migrated to the new API before the deprecation deadline. Otherwise, devices could lose access to certificate-based network authentication.
In addition to this, the update includes routine bug fixes, performance improvements, and security patches.
Why is ChromeOS 148 a silent, security-focused release?
The lack of new user-facing features coincides with Google’s preparations for ChromeOS 150, which is scheduled for release on July 21, 2026. ChromeOS 150 will be the next long-term candidate and will serve as the basis for the long-term support channel.
This LTS channel is primarily used by schools and enterprises to keep devices on a stable software foundation over an extended period, with only critical security updates supported, rather than regular feature updates every four weeks. Google engineers typically freeze the code base before the LTC release to ensure stability.
Before that freeze, as seen with ChromeOS 148, the focus is on tightening security and fixing bugs rather than adding new features that could introduce instability into the next baseline.
What ChromeOS users and administrators should do next
Users must install ChromeOS 148 once it appears in Settings under About ChromeOS. This update includes security patches and skipping it could leave devices vulnerable to known issues addressed in the release.
Enterprise administrators managing certificate-based networks should review the Certificate Provisioning API documentation if they have not already migrated, especially as the end-2026 deadline for the legacy system approaches.
