Microsoft has gone slowly reducing your Copilot integrationfollowing the revelation of a comprehensive plan to improve Windows 11 in the coming months, but the AI platform still comes to the Windows 11 taskbar in the form of Ask Copilot. In a recently published article internal e-bookMicrosoft lays out its strategy to stop adding Copilot buttons to each app, saying it will instead better integrate AI into Windows 11 in a more central location. As first reported latest windowsFootnotes in the documentation confirm that the Ask Copilot taskbar experience and Click to Do Excel extraction tool will be released in mid-2026. The document says: “(These capabilities) are not yet widely available and are expected to arrive in mid-2026. “Timing and availability are subject to change,” so there is still a chance this release window could change. The document also highlights that this feature will come to business professionals first and will not be a default feature on regular Windows 11 PCs.
I bet that will change relatively quickly. Of course, you can also enable Ask Copilot in your taskbar if you want to try it out.
Ask Copilot replaces current search UI AI popup
This is part of Microsoft’s Windows K2 improvement plan
The Ask Copilot taskbar, announced last year, replaces the search box with a dynamic chat box that users can interact with. The idea is that this is a simpler and faster way to interact with Microsoft AI. Ask Copilot replaces the current Windows taskbar search UI, which features a floating pop-up window that allows you to search for local files and interact with AI.
Microsoft’s broader plan to improve Windows 11, called Windows K2, does not have a specific release date. Instead, it consists of several upcoming updates that will resolve key points of the operating system, including Troubleshoot operating system driversimproving the Search for the start menuand do it faster and more responsively.
