Earlier this spring, Apple introduced apple businesswhich combines Apple Business Essentials, Apple Business Manager, and Apple Business Connect (including Apple Maps Connect) into a single platform. While free device management was the key aspect of the announcement, integrating Apple Business Connect into an IT-managed portal solved a problem that I’m not sure people were aware of.

The era of Apple Maps Connect
People in retail and marketing probably remember the early days of Apple Maps Connect. Before it changed its name to Apple Business Connect, claiming a business’s location in Apple Maps was a fairly complicated process. In most companies, a marketing manager simply logs into the portal using their personal Apple account (then known as Apple ID).
Because these profiles were linked to personal accounts, the company did not actually have the keys to its own digital store in Apple Maps. I experienced this first hand. Long after I had moved on to other jobs, I still had full administrative access to update hours of operation, upload photos, and modify location data for several previous locations. The IT teams at those organizations had no idea who controlled their presence in Apple Maps. Since they weren’t retailers, probably no one had to change anything.
Bringing the digital showcase to YOU
By incorporating Apple Business Connect into the core Apple Business platform, Apple solved the problem. Location data, place cards, organizational details, and brand management are now treated with exactly the same level of scrutiny as deploying a fleet of Macs.
The secret weapon here is Apple’s managed account ecosystem. Apple Business allows businesses to automate the creation of Managed Apple Accounts by integrating directly with identity providers like Google Workspace.
Instead of expecting their employee to use a shared Apple account, IT administrators can now assign specific roles and permissions to an employee using their official corporate identity platform. When an employee leaves the company, IT simply revokes their managed Apple account. The company retains full control over location data, ensuring that former employees cannot alter the company’s presence on Apple Maps.

Integrating Apple Maps controls into Apple Business was a smart move. Apple didn’t have the ecosystem beforehand to do this. I don’t think most IT people know who owned this before, unless it came up. While Apple had methods for a company to “take over” control, the process was very manual (requiring mailing something to the company). Again, unless you’re the type of company that’s constantly modifying Apple Maps data, it’s probably a set-it-and-forget-it task with name, domain, phone, etc.
This announcement finally closes the loop on a persistent shadow IT problem and gives IT departments the visibility and control they should have had all along. Put another way, marketing can manage, while IT controls access.
