Featured standalone app: ‘NextThere’ helps you navigate public transportation with valuable information

welcome to Featured Standalone App. This is a weekly 9to5Mac series where we showcase the latest apps from the world of standalone apps. If you are a developer and want your app to appear, get in contact.

Navigating different cities and figuring out their public transportation can sometimes be a bit complicated. Map apps may not always have the best information, or the apps that do exist may not present the data in a very readable way.

NextThere aims to address that issue and also includes a lot of historical data to provide more informed information on delays, timeliness, etc. It is ideal for both tourists and frequent travelers.

Highlights

NextThere It is not a new application, although it has many more features in its latest update, 4.1. Adds output analytics, a real-time vehicle map, and a greatly improved user interface. The app also expanded from Australia and New Zealand to select US regions, including New York, Los Angeles, North Carolina, Boston, Hawaii, Chicago, the San Francisco Bay Area, Portland, and Washington state. Also supports Ontario, Canada.

Unfortunately, this is not a complete list of US cities with public transportation; some of the key cities missing are Atlanta, Washington DC and Philadelphia. That said, once you use the app, you’ll realize the attention to detail required to properly support each city, rather than just having a generic experience.

Two of the things I liked the most are the real-time vehicle map and the detailed information about delays. The first feature is two-fold: you will both see vehicles on the route as they move, but there is also a feature to check the exact vehicle tracks for individual buses or trains, seeing where they slowed down or got stuck in traffic.

As for detailed delay information, the app takes historical route performance into account and shows you on-time performance, route delays, and also status information. If you are a tourist in a new city, seeing the historical spectacle could be helpful in planning your trips.

NextThere It also offers widgets, live activities, and real-time notifications to give you more detailed information in the moment.
