WhatsApp tests logout option that preserves chat history on Android

WhatsApp is testing a new logout option in Android which logs users out of their accounts without deleting messages or settings.

This feature keeps chat history and notification preferences intact on the device, allowing users to log back in without needing a complete reinstall like before. WABetaInfo spotted the update in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android.

This change fixes a long-standing issue where signing out of WhatsApp would delete local messages, making the process of signing back in slower and less convenient.

How the new option to log out of WhatsApp on Android works

Currently, signing out of WhatsApp deletes messages from the device, meaning users must restore from backup and reconfigure settings when they log back in.

The new logout option works more like other apps: chat history is preserved on the device, notification settings remain the same, and login credentials are stored locally instead of being erased. Logging back into your account is faster as the app restores the previous state immediately.

Meta describes the feature as a more flexible alternative to uninstalling the app, especially for users who want to pause data usage or take a break from messaging.

Where to find the new logout option and when it will be implemented

For beta testers who have access to the feature, the option to sign out appears in the app settings on the Account screen. When selected, initiates the logout process, which includes a confirmation step before finishing.

After confirmation, the account is disconnected from the device, but stored data and access details remain intact. WhatsApp also displays several tips to help users avoid logging out in certain situations before completing the process.

The feature is currently rolling out to some users participating in the WhatsApp beta program, following the release of WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.26.21.9, which is available through the Google Play Store beta testing channel.

WhatsApp has not announced when the native logout option will be available in the stable version of the app, if it will be introduced on iOS, or if regional availability will vary. As with most beta features, functionality may change before a broader release.
