The research company MoffetNathanson has developed a new quality index for streaming services and Apple TV surpassed Netflix in the top positions.
Apple TV trails Disney and HBO Max, but beats all other streamers in new quality index
Engagement is the metric that many streaming services use to measure their success. This focus on “time invested” helps explain why the Netflix founder once said that service competes with sleep.
But since not all types of participation are equal, researchers from MoffetNathanson have developed a new “Quality” indicator to judge the performance of streamers.
As Matthew Belloni explains in his last Disk fact sheetThere are five metrics that drive rankings:
- viewing time of day (“prime time is a better indicator of intentionality and attention than, say, midnight”)
- demand for content, for data services
- franchise depth
- prestige (awards, critical reception)
- sports/live events

As the bar chart shows, Disney far outperforms all of its competitors on the quality index. HBO Max and Apple TV are almost tied for second place, with HBO Max barely edging out Apple.
Netflix isn’t far behind Apple TV, with a big drop following before Amazon, Peacock and Paramount+ round out the list.

Because the industry values engagement so much, Apple often ranks near the bottom of comparisons between different streaming services. However, this new “Quality” indicator shows that the streamer is successful in a key area that is very important to viewers.
Apple has always emphasized that it wants to create the best content, not the most. While driving engagement is certainly an internal goal, hopefully it’s always done with the goal of maintaining strong quality.
