On paper, Brave looks like a great browser. It runs smoothly, has built-in security tools, and a privacy-focused design. However, over the years, the Brave team has slowly added features to its browser that people don’t really like. If you’re someone who doesn’t like all the things Brave has added, you can now download Brave Origin, a stripped-down version without all the bloat. Oh, but you have to pay $60 to get it.
Brave Origin will cost you $60 to remove things you didn’t order
Although it is a one-time purchase.
As reported by Digital trendsthe Brave team did a thread of posts in X explaining the new plan. In response to people asking for a smaller browser, the company launched brave origin for desktop and Android, with an iOS version in the works.
Brave Origin’s main feature is not what it adds, but what it removes; It will remove email aliases, Leo AI, VPN tool, Brave Wallet implementation, and Speedreader, to name a few. You can download a browser with all of them disabled, or you can update your Brave browser with a panel that lets you modify which ones you keep.
The good news is that Brave allows people to use Origin for free if they use Linux. The bad news is that if you’re not on Team Tux, you’ll have to pay $60 for Brave Origin. Of course, you only need to buy it once and you’ll get unlimited activations on all your devices, but it’s still a bitter pill to swallow if you don’t want the features in the first place. In fact, one could argue that the toggles panel should have been added on day one.
If you want to download the Brave Origin app, you can purchase it from the Brave Premium Website. If you want to update your Brave browser to include the Brave Origin panel, go to “brave://settings/system”, search for Brave Origin and pay for it. Then click “Update Source” and you will see all the features you can turn on and off.
