Following the greats Neural Expressive Redesigned at I/O 2026 last month, Google is rolling out some tweaks to the Gemini overlay on Android.
Update 6/6: Dynamic color for Gemini overlay is now implemented for stable users with version 17.28 of the Google application.
originals 6/2: The Gemini overlay now uses dynamic color. This theme is most evident in dark mode, where the text field and accompanying chips are no longer gray.
Old versus new

With a light theme, the overlay pickup barely changes (except for the microphone), but you can see the difference by opening the ‘more’ menu. The blade is tinted, while the carousel options have a more prominent theme.
You can also open the Gemini app to compare, with no dynamic color available in the full chat experience. This change is being implemented with Google app beta version version 17.28.
The “Screen Contents” option that captures the current screen and adds it to the message is now part of the main carousel along with Photos, Camera, Files, Drive and Notebooks for a more compact experience.
It was previously listed as tools with Images and Personal Intelligence. This change is widely implemented in the stable channel (version 17.26). Make sure to force stop the Google app if you don’t see it yet.
