First revealed during Sony’s State of Playmany assumed the game was exclusive to the console. This is largely because PlayStation does not display logos of its competitors during its presentations, a practice that remains a contentious issue among Xbox fans.
Not long ago, Matt Booty revealed that Xbox plans to display competitor logos during its own presentations. Personally, I’m not convinced it’s the right decision, especially if Xbox wants to become the number one gaming platform by 2030.
Anyway, enough ranting; Let’s talk about RuneScape.
For those unfamiliar, RuneScape began life as a browser-based point-and-click MMORPG in 2001. Over the years, it evolved into two separate games, RuneScape 3 and OldSchool RuneScape. Yes, there are indeed two versions of RuneScape that coexist today, with OldSchool RuneScape generally being the more popular of the two.
Expanding beyond those games, Jagex released RuneScape: Dragonwilds in Early Access last year on Steam. However, it’s quite different from what you’d normally expect from RuneScape. Instead of a traditional MMORPG, Dragonwilds is much closer to a survival game like Valheim, and that’s certainly not a bad thing.
Fortunately for Xbox players, RuneScape: Dragonwilds launches on September 15.2026, for Xbox Series|S. Even better, it will support Xbox Play Anywhere, a feature that has really influenced whether I buy certain games or not.
As a quick refresher, Xbox Play Anywhere means that if you buy the game on Xbox, you’ll also have it on your PC. Your progress is transmitted to both platforms and achievements are also shared between them.
Now, I don’t expect anyone to know this about me, and if anything it would be strange if they did, but I grew up playing RuneScape; in fact, my account is about two decades old. It’s still one of my favorite games of all time, right up there with Halo, so I’m definitely looking forward to finally giving Dragonwilds a chance.
But what about you? Has RuneScape: Dragonwilds caught your attention or is it not really your thing? Let me know in the comments and be sure to participate in our survey!
