iOS 27: Your iPhone can now boot into a new Mac-like recovery mode

iOS 27 introduces a new device recovery mode. This is a Mac-like recovery feature where the iPhone can boot into an alternative user interface that does not involve loading the entire main operating system.

In the new recovery mode, you can restore your software, enter diagnostic mode, wipe the device, and perform some automated fixes using Recovery Wizard.

This feature is available in both iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, for iPhone and iPad.

How to enter recovery mode in iOS 27

  1. To enter the new recovery mode, first turn off the device as usual.
  2. Then, when the phone is off, press and hold the side button to turn on the device. The Apple logo will appear on the screen as a normal startup.
  3. Keep pressing the side button for a long period and a progress bar will appear below the logo, and then the phone will boot into recovery mode.

The procedure is similar to how to enter recovery mode on Apple Silicon Macs, where you simply press and hold the Touch ID power button.

Options available on the new iOS recovery screen include “Recovery Wizard,” “Software Update,” “Diagnostic Mode,” “Erase all content and settings,” and “Recovery Mode.”

Additionally, the current battery percentage is displayed in the top corner of the screen and the phone will automatically connect to your known WiFi network. A power button on the toolbar gives you the option to allow the phone to try to restart normally.

The new recovery options should mean that some last-resort fixes that previously required connecting to a computer can now be performed independently on the iOS device.

Obviously, it is quite rare that such a recovery is necessary. Occasionally it can occur when a software update fails to install, such as if the phone suddenly runs out of battery while an update is being performed.

Some iOS beta versions in the past have also caused the device to soft-lock and enter boot loops; If that happens in the future, you may be able to use the Software Update recovery wizard to reinstall the last known stable version of the operating system, without needing to enter DFU mode and restore using a computer.
