After being paraded and teased at the Android fair just a few weeks ago“Screen Reactions” are now available in the latest version. Android 17 QPR1 Beta 4 Released for eligible Pixel phones.
With the release of the latest Android 17 preview, we now have an idea of how the Screen Reactions green screen effect will work with Pixel devices. Integrated into the system screen recorder, there is a new “Show selfie camera” option that will appear along with other controls for the built-in video option.
This method negates the external editing or external app process that was often needed before on Pixel phones to get these green screen video clips. Instead, you can do it all locally from a system app and have it ready to upload or share instantly, with no further editing or adjustments required.
You can only use Screen Reactions when you record the entire screen. The option is not available when using the “Single Application” recording option. As soon as you activate the option, you’ll get a preview immediately before recording, allowing you to frame, set up, and prepare.
A paint swatch tool is also present, so you can add a colored background to your little selfie video. This helps if you want to stand out from the screen recording in question. Unfortunately, there are currently only six color variants to choose from, including black, purple, red, blue, green, and orange. We hope this will be expanded or allow for a custom color at some point in the future.
This will instantly toggle local microphone recording, but you can disable it if you want as it doesn’t seem to be necessary for Screen Reactions to work.
Subject isolation is very good, with sharp cutouts that work well with the face, shoulders, and even hands and other objects. Considering that screen reactions are handled by the selfie camera and work on even lower resolution selfie cameras like the Pixel A series, the results are very impressive.
