The transition to Gemini on Android Auto has been a bit difficult for a number of reasons, but a current bug has left some users unable to make calls due to a strange bug, and it’s not just a problem behind the wheel.
Update 06/16: talking to 9to5GoogleGoogle says this issue has now been fixed. Users still affected can check for app updates through the Google Play Store.
We are aware of an issue that is preventing some users from making calls with Gemini on Android Auto and mobile devices. Now a solution is available and users can resolve it by updating their app to the latest version on Google Play Store.
Our original coverage is as follows:
Confirmed by quite a few Android Auto users separately Reddit threads This week, Gemini cannot make calls using voice commands in the car. Gemini’s ability to make calls on Android itself also appears to be affected.
An error message saying “Something went wrong. Please try again” appears on the phone, as shown below.

Since this is not an Android Auto-only issue, it’s hard to say what exactly is the root cause of the issue, but it’s probably due to a Gemini or Google app update.
Several affected users say that switching back to Google Assistant seems to fix the issue, but it’s definitely a short-term fix.
We will update this post as more details become available.
Notably, this is because we’ve also noticed in recent days that Android Auto has been intermittently displaying the Assistant icon again instead of Gemini, despite using Gemini for response. It’s random and hard to repeat, but we’ve seen it several times in the past few days. Let us know in the comments below if you see this visual error.
